The Baselworld Watch and Jewelry Show dates back as far as 1917. It all began with the opening of the first Schweizer Mustermesse Basel. This trade show had a section specifically devoted to watches and jewelry. By 1925 there was a much larger presence of watchmakers and jewelers from all over Europe represented at the show. Over the years the worlds finest designers continued to flock to the annual trade show, until it was eventually renamed BASEL with two numbers following to denote the year in 1983. (ie: BASEL 83) 1986 marks the first year that vendors outside of Europe attended, showcasing their work in this world famous trade show.
In 1995, the show was renamed to BASEL 95 – The World Watch, Clock and Jewelry Show. Shortly thereafter, a new hall was constructed with 36,000 square meters of additional exhibition space. Then in 2003, the show was once again renamed, this time taking on its current iteration as BaselWorld, The Watch and Jewelry Show. The following year saw the introduction of a new hall complex, which extended the exhibition area to 160,000 square meters, and attracting over 90,000 visitors.
Today it is listed in the top ten as one of the worlds’ foremost watch, fine jewelry and gem stone trade shows.
